Golden Milk

Golden milk is rightly named for its wonderful yellow color from turmeric. There are many variations of golden milk, but some are a little high in sugar. This one uses honey as a sweetener and is packed with nutritious warming spices and healthy fats. Golden milk is a wonderful bedtime snack and warming drink. If you’re not a huge fan of herbal tea or want a bit of a heartier beverage, this one is for you. It’s perfect for athletes because of the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric. The addition of a small pinch of black pepper makes the turmeric more bioavailable, meaning it makes it easier for your body to absorb. The ginger also is wonderful for digestion and the coconut oil is a healthy fat that improves the texture of the drink and will help keep you full.

1 cup of coconut or almond milk

1 teaspoon coconut oil

1 teaspoon turmeric powder

½ teaspoon minced ginger

½ teaspoon cinnamon

Pinch of black pepper

Honey to taste

Heat all of the ingredients together and drink warm.  You can also blend all of the ingredients in a blender, warm up the mixture and drink.

Alternatively, you can make a dry powder mixture to store.

Here’s a sample mixture for you:

½ cup turmeric powder

¼ cup cinnamon powder

2 teaspoons ground black pepper

1-2 Tablespoons ground ginger

½ teaspoon of cayenne (optional for increased metabolism)

When you are ready for your nightly drink, mix 1 teaspoon of the mix to 1 cup of heated non-dairy milk, add a touch of honey, and enjoy.
